Day of Silence

Hello everyone,
The official Day of Silence is this Friday, April 17th. For those of you who don't know, the Day of Silence is a nationwide movement participated in by members of the LGBT community and their straight allies to protest homophobia and anti-gay bullying in schools. The symbolic nature of remaining silent for an entire day represents the thousands of teens who are unable or unwilling to speak up about being gay for fear of repercussions, and reminds those of us who are lucky enough to be in a safe and accepting community that there are many teens around the world who don't have that privilege.

Since we don't have school this week, the Day of Silence will be something that we all observe individually. It's a powerful experience, and I would strongly recommend it.

UCI's LGBT Center has kindly invited any Uni students who want to come to join them at a SpeakOut on Thursday from 12-1 pm, at the Student Center Terrace to learn more about the National Day of Silence and how each person (LGBT or straight) can participate. They have also extended an invitation to come to the official Breaking the Silence event at the end of the day, and attend the 2cnd Chance Prom from 8pm-12am, CCC White Room. Tickets are available at the LGBT Center, and are $10 each.

There is also a Bisexuality panel and Bi 101 workshop going on, Wednesday April 15th, from 6:30-8 pm in the Career Center Training Room at UCI for anyone interested in learning more about the bisexual community or bisexuality in general.

Hope you all are having a good Spring Break!
-Erika Grant, GSA President
